Standing head and shoulders over his teammates, Shakib Al Hasan is a name that has taken Bangladesh cricket by storm. Hailing from Magura, Jessore in southwestern Bangladesh, Shakib is a penetrating and economical left arm spinner and talented middle order batsman. In a team known for their inconsistency, Shakib has been a rare find excelling in all departments including batting, bowling, and captaincy. Time and time again, Shakib has rescued Bangladesh from perilous positions and has been the key figure behind their victories. His performances have been such that he is currently rated by the ICC as the top all rounder in One Day Internationals (ODIs), ahead of cricketing greats such as Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi, and Daniel Vettori.

In October 2010, Shakib Al Hasan led Bangladesh to a historic 4-0 series whitewash over a full-strength New Zealand team featuring the likes of Brendan McCullum, Ross Taylor, and Daniel Vettori. This was the first time Bangladesh achieved such a feat over a full-strength, recognized Test playing nation. This series victory was also significant in that it propelled Bangladesh to the No. 8 position in one day cricket, on par with the West Indies. The man of the series was once again - you guessed it - Shakib Al Hasan.

Bangladesh's series victory over New Zealand was not the first time Shakib helped Bangladesh make history. In July 2009, Shakib filled in for injured captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and led Bangladesh to its first overseas Test series victory over the West Indies. He once again led from the front as an under strength West Indies side were outmatched and whitewashed in both the Test and ODI series. Even on occasions where Bangladesh were on the losing end, Shakib's performances truly stood out. Few can forget his stunning performance against New Zealand in the First Test in Chittagong of October, 2008 where his figures of 7 for 36 remain the best ever recorded by a Bangladeshi bowler. Having decimated the New Zealand batting line up in their first innings, Shakib went on to dish out more punishment with the bat scoring a fluent 71 in Bangladesh's second innings. His memorable 108 against Pakistan in April, 2008 after Bangladesh were reduced to 10/3 and then 16/4 was equally impressive. Among his other accolades, Shakib is the Wisden cricketer of the year for 2009 and became the first Bangladeshi to represent an English county when he signed with Worcestershire. He is widely regarded as the finest all rounder Bangladesh has produced, and at only 23 years of age, Shakib's best years are far ahead of him.

As of October 17th, 2010, Shakib has played in 98 ODI matches scoring 2678 runs at an average of 34.33 with five centuries, 15 half centuries, and a best score of 134 not out. He has also taken 120 one day wickets with an economy rate of 4.21. Shakib has also played in 21 Test matches scoring 1179 runs with one century and five half centuries at an average of 31.02. His bowling figures in Test matches include 75 scalps at a very economical 2.84.

 Towards the end of captaincy

In February to March April 2011, Bangladesh co-hosted the World Cup with India and Sri Lanka. West Indies dismissed Bangladesh for 58 runs, the team's lowest score in ODIs and a record low for a Full Member at the World Cup. Shakib's house was stoned by angry fans in the aftermath, as was the West Indies team bus as it left the ground.Bangladesh registered wins against England, Ireland and the Netherlands, but defeats by West Indies, India and South Africa meant they did not progress beyond the first round of the tournament. With 8 wickets at an average of 27.87, Shakib was Bangladesh's lead wicket-taker in the tournament, and his 142 runs from 6 innings made him the team's third highest run-scorer.

Shortly after the World Cup, Australia toured Bangladesh for three ODIs. In the first match of the series, Shakib scored 51 to pass 3,000 runs in ODIs. Bangladesh lost the series 3-0 Shakib scored 69 runs in three matches and took just one wicket whilst conceding 117 runs. Shane Watson's performances in the series meant he was ranked first amongst ODI all-rounders, claiming the position from Shakib. For the 2011 Indian Premier League, held in April and May, Shakib was contracted by Kolkata Knight Riders for US$425,000. He made his debut in the tournament on 15 April in a match against Rajasthan Royals. He claimed two wickets in the match, first that of Amit Paunikar and then Shane Watson, and was not called on to bat as his team won by nine wickets. KKR were knocked out in the semi-finals of the competition; Shakib played in seven matches, taking 11 wickets at an average of 15.90 and finished as KKR's third-highest wicket-taker. After the IPL, Shakib returned to Worcestershire for seven weeks. He played a single County Championship match as his time with the team coincided with the 2011 Friends Life t20, but in that match he took seven wickets and passed 3,000 runs in first-class cricket. Worcestershire finished fifth out of nine teams in their group for the t20 competition, failing to qualify for the quarter-finals From 12 matches Shakib took 19 wickets, finishing as the club's leading wicket-taker, equal with seam bowler Gareth Andrew
